I don’t get much time to draw for myself these days, so instead of going to bed last night I stayed up and had wine and drew poses from Sia’s Chandelier video. The video’s dancer is amazing. I wish I could have captured her energy better. Also I need to draw hands and feet more, I’m pretty rusty.
Drawing poses from still pictures has always been a favorite way to relax, yet still get some drawing done. Recently though I started getting tired of the same types of poses in the magazines and books I used for inspiration, so I started taking tons of weird (and sometimes unflattering) selfies to use for reference. Usually I change the body type and clothes and add a different face to make it someone else, but these I just kinda went ahead and drew.
When my drawings feel stiff and gross, sometimes I like to look up “dance practice” on YouTube and do little gestures. You can add an extra descriptive word to get better results. Lots of body type varieties and weird poses you might never think of yourself.
